{"id":6437,"date":"2023-02-21T12:37:43","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T05:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/farparents.com\/?p=6437"},"modified":"2024-09-27T13:46:26","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T06:46:26","slug":"a-short-history-of-the-name-of-koh-nang-yuan-the-iconic-of-samui-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farparents.com\/?p=6437","title":{"rendered":"A short history of the Name of Koh Nang Yuan, the iconic of Samui region."},"content":{"rendered":"\n\t<div id=\"gap-897372361\" class=\"gap-element clearfix\" style=\"display:block; height:auto;\">\n\t\t\n<style>\n#gap-897372361 {\n  padding-top: 30px;\n}\n<\/style>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Let\u2019s start with its name first, if your readers don\u2019t want to go along with it about how the name Koh Nang Yuan was given, just skip to the next paragraph.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">People tried to determine why the island has the name \u2018\u2019Koh Nang Y(\u0e0d)uan\u2019\u2019, (Koh = island).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The legend<\/strong> said, that a small group of fishermen once visited the island, when they looked at the 2 Sub-islands of Koh Nang Yuan, they imagined that it looked like a woman\u2019s breasts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And the Thai word for \u2018\u2019breast\u2019\u2019 is \u2018\u2019Nom\u2019\u2019. The name of the island would have been <strong>Koh Nom <\/strong>or Breasts Island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is understandable until now. But the fishermen added the word \u2018\u2019 Y(\u0e0d)uan \u2018\u2019 after \u2018\u2019Nom\u2019\u2019 and no one can explain why they added the word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So that time, the fishermen called the island \u2018\u2019 <strong>Koh Nom Y<\/strong>(\u0e0d)<strong>uan<\/strong>\u2019\u2019. Since then, the fishermen called this name \u2018\u2019 <strong>Koh Nom Y<\/strong>(\u0e0d)<strong>uan<\/strong>\u2019\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Time went by, and the name was changed to \u2018\u2019<strong>Koh Nang Y<\/strong>(\u0e0d)<strong>uan<\/strong>\u2019\u2019 Why was <strong>Nom<\/strong> be changed to <strong>Nang<\/strong>, still no official explanation,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in my personal assumption, it is just because Nom = breasts sounds quite unpolite and was changed to Nang which still relates to lady or woman<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and sounds officially polite and both words sound almost homophone. Now we are almost done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Afterward, the locals noticed the tourist potentiality of the island. They changed the name again from \u2018\u2019<strong>Koh Nang Y<\/strong>(\u0e0d)<strong>uan\u2019\u2019 <\/strong>to<strong> \u2018<\/strong>\u2019<strong>Koh Nang Y<\/strong>(\u0e22)<strong>uan. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The difference between these old and new names is just <strong>Y<\/strong>(\u0e0d)<strong>uan <\/strong>and<strong> Y<\/strong>(\u0e22)<strong>uan<\/strong>. In Thai, <strong>Y<\/strong>(\u0e22)<strong>uan <\/strong>means allure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since <strong>Nang = Lady<\/strong> and <strong>Y<\/strong>(\u0e22)<strong>uan = <\/strong>allure. Then the whole name of the<strong> \u2018\u2019Koh Nang Y<\/strong>(\u0e22)<strong>uan\u2019\u2019 <\/strong>means an alluring lady (island) that attracts people from all regions to visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In my personal thought, the second story should be real. It has more obvious physical pieces of evidence like 2 Sub-island of Koh Nang Yaun that look like the woman\u2019s breasts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since it relates to the main figure of the island, is it important enough to influent the name of itself?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I know that these complicated stories might make you as foreigners get headaches, but one thing I just want to tell you is that even a Native Thai cannot easily understand these complicated stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Even so, the fishermen from other regions called this island \u2018\u2019Koh Hang Tao\u2019\u2019 (Turtle Tail Island) because it is located behind Ko Tao (Turtle Island).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But the people in Koh Pha-Ngan still called it <strong>Koh Nang Yuan <\/strong>unlike people from other regions did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Because when Ko Tao was viewed from Koh Pha-Ngan, the turtle\u2019s head is where the Sai Ri beach is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Near the Sai Ri beach, there is Koh Nang Yuan, so with the view from Koh Pha-Ngan, Koh Nang Yuan is located at the head of Koh Tao.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But why they didn\u2019t call it Turtlehead Island, I really don\u2019t know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nowadays, Koh Nang Yuan is used to be an iconic vacation in Samui region. Because of it super clear water surrounds by and the white sand banks that people can walk on to reach each island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I suggest you not to miss visiting this island when you visit Samui.
